IF YOU WANT TO BOX

In order to become an amateur boxer you must be between the ages of 8 - 34. You must first register with your local boxing committee before you are eligible to compete. You will need two pictures, a copy of your birth certificate and $51 if you are in the southeastern LBC region. Other regions may have different fees. You will fill out a form and turn it back in to your gym. If you are under 18, you will need a parent or guardian signature on the form.

You will need a mouthpiece and a pair of hand wraps. You can usually get both for under $20 and if you take care of them they will last years. Most gyms have the necessary equipment for training and actual matches. You have the option of buying your own equipment such as a groin protector, headgear and boxing shoes. The protector and headgear MUST have the official USA boxing seal which signifies approval for competition.
You can buy your own training gloves for workouts but the gloves you use for actual matches will be supplied by the host of the boxing show.
You can train and compete in tennis shoes if you do not have boxing shoes.

On your first day, you will be assigned a trainer. Under his direction you will be on a workout schedule until he feels you are ready for your first match.

Good Luck

Hi I have been training at La Boxing for about a year and I live in Southern California. Where am i able to find a trainer for myself if i cannot find one, because I am interesting in competing.

Chris, you need to go look at the list at the link I include in this post. Find the gyms that are closest to you and email them asking if they are registered members of USA Boxing. Also ask them if they compete in sanctioned USA Boxing events. This is who you need to get with. There will be many places called "boxing gyms" that are just basically boxing for fitness or health club type atmospheres that happen to teach boxing as an activity but they are affiliated with competitive amateur boxing. One of the gyms on the list will have what you need yo get you moving in the right direction towards competing.

You do take girls right?, i want to take up boxing just to get in shape. So do i have to be experience? I don't care to compete, it might be fun. I just want to be in shape. So do you have a gym anywhere in East Tennessee? I live in Maryville! Hope you reply, Katie.

I live in Johnson City and want to start training to box, is there anywhere closer than Knoxville? And where would I locate my local boxing committee?

FightersDomain said...

Lanie, Yes, Contact the Johnson City Athletic Club. Call your parks and rec department for directions and phone number.
They have an excellent boxing program. Good Luck

You can come to the gym in chilhowee park anytime after 4/7/11. The person at the door will help you get registered, if everything is in order, you will be assigned a coach and get started. Gym is open from 7 to 9pm mon, tues and thurs.

Are the payments monthly

If you are between 8-34, never received prize-money for a fight of any kind and willing to be matched in competitive competition, the training only requires a yearly registration fee of $51. You will have to purchase a mouthpiece and a pair of hand wraps.
